La Sylphide

I’ve come across some interesting stuff relating to La Sylphide recently. The first is this great quote by dance writer Marina Harss which poignantly, insightfully summarizes the story:

La Sylphide has the starkness of a Grimm folktale. The good survive, the sinners perish; and along the way, a delicate, innocent creature is destroyed. Nothing could be simpler, or more cruel.”

The second is this trailer by the Bucharest National Opera House. Though it doesn’t provide the most accurate reflection of what audiences could expect to see onstage (for all the darkness of the plot, there’s a lot of lilting lightness in La Sylphide’s music and dancing), nonetheless, it’s stunning as a dance film.
